How to Write a Compelling “Why This University?” Essay

Supplemental essays are where generic applications fail. Learn how to research a school and connect its offerings to your own goals.
How to Write a Compelling “Why This University?” Essay

The “Why us?” essay is the supplemental question students underestimate most. Admissions readers use it to gauge whether you have actually looked into their university — and whether you would thrive there. A vague answer signals a school that is simply on your list; a specific one signals genuine fit.

What readers are actually asking

The question is really two questions: what do you want from a university, and why do you believe this one provides it? A strong essay answers both, and links them explicitly.

Research beyond the homepage

  • Read course catalogues and find two or three specific classes you would take
  • Look up faculty whose work connects to your interests — and be able to say why
  • Identify programmes, labs, centres, or study-abroad options unique to that school
  • Explore student organisations and read the student newspaper for a sense of campus culture

Details that could apply to any university — beautiful campus, great professors, strong community — add nothing.

Connect, do not list

Every specific you mention should be tied to something about you. “The Data Science for Social Good lab” is a fact; “I want to join the Data Science for Social Good lab because my summer project mapping food deserts left me with questions I could not answer alone” is an argument.

The best “Why us?” essays are really “Why us, for me?” essays.

Common mistakes

  • Recycling the same essay with the school name swapped in
  • Spending half the word count on rankings or prestige
  • Naming things the school is famous for without a personal link
  • Focusing entirely on what the school offers and nothing on what you would contribute

A simple structure

Open with a concrete interest or goal. Introduce two or three specific opportunities at the school that serve it, each with a sentence on why it matters to you. Close with how you would contribute to the community. Keep it under the word limit with room to spare.

Key takeaways

  • Answer what you want and why this school delivers it
  • Use specifics found through real research, not the homepage
  • Tie every detail back to your own goals
  • Never reuse a generic essay across schools
  • Mention what you will contribute, not only what you will gain
